How to Create Engaging Content & Engage with Your Audience

Generating engagement on social media can be a challenge! Know that if your metrics have dropped, you are not alone. With content being posted and shared at a mind-boggling rate, you may wonder how your content can stand out and get the interactions and conversions it deserves. Focus on your message as content is king! Scroll-stopping content usually doesn’t just happen. Typically, it is well thought out and executed and encourages the user to interact, therefore increasing your engagement metrics. How do you create engaging content?

First, the piece of content needs to have a specific purpose, then you determine which of the following will be included in the piece of material.

1) A specific call to action

2) A question for the user to respond to that relates directly to the message

3) A polling question, survey, question box etc.

A call to action should include a link or contact information that quickly and easily takes your reader directly to where you want them to go. Don’t leave it to them to try and figure out what you want them to do or where they should go. Some sample calls to action I use for my business are outlined below:

Another method to drive engagement is to utilize the range of useful tools offered by social media platforms. They can include polls and question boxes to quizzes and sliding scales and more. Use these features to gather audience feedback and then use the information collected as future content. Think of your favourite brands and businesses and their online presence. What makes them stand out? Chances are, they are the ones that connect with their customers by liking, sharing and commenting on their customers content, rather than blatant product promotion and overly corporate messaging. They also respond to messages and comments quickly and genuinely, so their customers know they care and are there for them. Strive to communicate like your favourite brands. Use them as inspiration and as a model for your digital marketing communications.

Some additional helpful actions you can take that could help to increase your engagement in the future include:

  • Follow accounts in your industry

  • Look up hashtags in both your industry and your local area to see who is posting

  • Research accounts of others in your industry/your competition to see what they are doing and see who is commenting on their content.

Keep in mind communication should always be a two-way dialogue. This creates a mutual relationship, which is a win-win situation. If you want people to engage with your content, you should reciprocate by interacting with your followers and others in your industry.
