On March 25, I had the opportunity to attend the BizCon Business Expo in Mississauga, Ontario. This was my first large in-person business event in quite some time. It was a full afternoon of networking, learning, and meaningful conversations with fellow business owners.

I have already shared a bit about my experience on social media, which can be viewed either on LinkedIn or Instagram.  After taking some time to reflect, I wanted to share my biggest takeaways from the three guest speakers I had the chance to listen to. Their insights were practical, timely, and very relevant to the work I do with my clients, which is helping them tell their story through written communication.

Guest Speaker Section Content

1. The Polite Nod Problem Nile Said, GoOneUp One message that really stood out was that clarity is not just a branding detail, it’s a growth advantage. Businesses often struggle to explain what they do in a way that others can easily understand and repeat. When messaging is unclear, it becomes harder to build trust, generate referrals, and maintain momentum. A simple but powerful reminder: If your message can’t be repeated, it can’t be referred. This reinforced the importance of sharpening how we communicated our value and paying attention to patterns in audience confusion.

2. Foundations of Real Marketing Ina Toncescu, noLMIT Marketing Another strong takeaway was that meaningful marketing is built on storytelling, strategic systems, and understanding your audience, not just trends, algorithms, or aesthetics. Key reminders included:

-       Know your audience

-       Use clear, simple language

-       Be authentic and personal

-       Importance of community engagement

-       Focus on quality and consistent content

-       Align your messaging with your values

These principles are foundational, yet over overlooked in the rush to “keep up” online.

3. Why Your AI Marketing Sounds Like Everyone Else Jason Hunt, Merged Media The final presentation explored how over-reliance on AI tools can lead to content that sounds generic and lacks personality. AI can be incredibly helpful, but it should be trained on YOUR voice and used as a strategic partner. It should not be a replacement for creativity or human connection. One insight that really resonated with me was the idea that creativity is like a muscle. If we stop using it, we risk losing it. Maintaining an authentic voice is essential for building trust and standing out. If we didn’t get a chance to meet and you would like to connect, feel free to send me a message. I would love the opportunity to chat. Reflection Attending events like BizCon is always a valuable reminder that strong communication, thoughtful marketing, and genuine connection continue to be at the heart of business growth. If you were at the event and we didn’t get a chance to meet, please feel free to reply to this email. I would love the opportunity to connect.
