Content Creation 101

What is Content Creation?

I talk a lot about good writing tips, tricks and strategies, but I would like to take a step back and provide some helpful information about what content actually is and why it is so important. Content creation is just what it sounds like, but should include the following steps. It should start with brainstorming topic ideas that would appeal to your audience(s). Once the topics are determined, it is time to conduct research, of course writing; develop visuals, which may include photography, videography and or graphic design; editing and finally posting the content. Don’t forget, content creation requires creativity!

Whether you are producing social media posts, a blog, an e-book, a report, a reel, a story or something else, if the goal is to educate, provide information or entertain, it’s a form of content creation. Why is Content Creation Important? Content is an essential part of a business and/or marketing strategy. Content creation is the foundation to building (and maintaining) an audience, especially an online community. Content creation helps people discover your business, brand and its products/services. The content helps you engage with current and potential customers, hopefully leading to future revenue for your business. The words, style, tone, voice and flow are all choices you make to establish your online brand.

Content Creation in 7 Steps

Now let’s get to the fun part…creating the content! Here’s are seven of my helpful tips to produce stellar, scroll stopping content.

  1. Build Your Toolbox: Find scheduling platforms, editing apps and other tools that will help you be more efficient with your content creation.

  2. Brainstorm Content Pillars: Research different ideas and determine 3-5 content pillars that make the most sense for your business. These content pillars will provide a clear guideline for consistent and varied content.

  3. Develop a Content Calendar: This process makes your think strategically, so you aren’t struggling to come up with ideas on a regular basis. Read my blog on this topic.

  4. Do Your Research: Look for content that has lots of comments and determine similarities and gaps in your content strategy and adjust accordingly.

  5. Create & Edit Your Content: Draft, review and refine your material. Don’t shortcut the process, as this is where mistakes happen. A small error could damage the reputation of your business.

  6. Schedule Your Content: Save time, stay organized and be consistent. If you are scheduling content in advance, make sure it is still relevant and appropriate, prior to it being published.

  7. Analyze Your Results: Review insights regularly to track metrics such as growth-rate, views, etc. Adjust future content accordingly, if necessary.

Social Media Content Creator Ideas Depending on the type of content being generated, different topics/themes resonate better with the specific audiences. As much of the work I do with my clients is social media focussed, below are a few of my favourite ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Create educational content

  • Share relevant industry news

  • Partner with other companies or influencers

  • Share user generated content

  • Participate in trends

  • Host a contest or giveaway

  • Share a testimonial or review

Helpful tip: Don’t forget to repurpose your content!

Take a piece of content and rework/tweak it into a different format so it gets more leverage.
